This is just a quickie diary to spread the good news. Today, California became the first state in the nation to outlaw trans fats from restaurants and food facilities. Governor Schwarzenegger signed a bill completely banning the artery-clogging oils and shortenings.
For decades, food manufacturers have known about the health dangers associated with hydrogenated oils in foods. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence showing transfats have got to go, restaurants and food manufacturers dug in their feet and claimed their products were healthy, much like the tobacco industry did before them. But the DFHs in CA prevailed, along with the likes of Marion Nestle and Michael Pollen, among others. Going forward, throughout the whole state of California, if health inspectors find violations of the ban, i.e., use of transfats in food products, the facilities will face fines from $25 to $1,000 per violation.
