Let's face it: Nancy Pelosi is the greatest Speaker of the House since, well like ever. Thanks to her accomplishments in office, the US is now on the cusp of a new liberal and progressive era, the likes of which would have been unimaginable just two short years ago.
Let us now direct our gaze to Pelosi's magnificent accomplishments since her ascent to her current position of leadership:
- After some initial hesitation, Pelosi skillfully pursued the eventually successful impeachment of former President George W. Bush. His replacement in the Oval Office, Joe Lieberman (who replaced Dick Cheney after a series of near-fatal heart attacks in 2007 rendered him unable to remain in office) has proven even more inept than Bush ever was, and is expected to be easily defeated (after barely securing his party's nomination) in the upcoming Presidential election this November.
- Pelosi, ever-sensitive to the reason that the Democrats were swept into Congressional majorities in November 2006, led the successful bid to end funding of the Iraq war. The homecoming is nearly complete for the 150,000 men and women in uniform who had at one point been stationed there. There have been many positive outcomes resulting from her courageous leadership in ending the war, including improved stability in the Middle East and central Asia, which among other things has made the once dreaded prospect of $100 per barrel oil seem unimaginable.
- Ending the war had another positive effect: those awful budget deficits that only a Republican could love have shown signs of decreasing. Initial fears of $400 billion plus federal budget deficits by the 2009 fiscal year did not bear fruit. Instead, we can now look forward to a potentially balanced budget within the scope of a presidential term.
- Then there is Pelosi's courageous championing of civil liberties - including spearheading successful efforts to end the White House practice of illegal wiretapping.
With a record like that, what is there for anyone with any liberal or progressive not to love? Heck, it's practically like a dream.
There's just one thing: Pelosi never did any of those things. Oh well, she did manage to make her predecessor, Dennis Hastert, look good. That should count for something, I suppose.
