The Obama campaign has (rightly) spent all day making McCain look like a (rich, elitist) fool for not knowing how many houses he (his wife?) owns. This is obviously a great line of attack because it counter's McCain's claims that Obama is an elitist and that McSame is a regular guy. But there's another angle here!
There's another slightly different angle that might be even more effective, or at least keep the story on the front page another day. McCain is the loser in this story because the vast majority of voters know how many houses they own, obviously. But I think the Obama campaigns next step should be to say, wait, most people don't even own ONE house, even the people who think they do. The banks own them, and are repossessing them at a record pace!
Not only is John McCain rich (for owning more than one house), and out of touch (for not knowing how many he actually owns) but unlike the rest of America he actually OWNS his house, and has a resonable expectation of doing so for the forseeable future.
Working class American's are getting squeezed between double digit inflation, declining wages and exploding unemployment, and the Republican nominee can't even keep track of how many houses he owns!
I realize this is a subtle difference in message, but so far this has been framed by Obama's campaign as a character/personality thing for McCain, but not as an economic issue. This is PROOF that McCain and his party has no interest in helping regular Americans, but only people who can't count how many houses (or boats or airplanes) they have!
