Note to Obama Campaign: You MUST seize this opportunity! (updated)
Just made some updates to correct the order of magnitude error in what McCain considers to be wealthy (guess I had a hard time wrapping my mind around that figure).
Thanks to PaulVA for the entry earlier which included the clip of McCain making a total fool of himself while daring a hard working American to pick lettuce for $50/hour. If you didn't see it, check it out...
PaulVA Diary
Are you kidding me Senator McCain?
Seriously, this sort of ammunition against the republican nominee is too easy to fire, and the Obama campaign needs to lock and load.
More below the fold...
Okay, perhaps I'm a bit confused or naive, but then again maybe it really is just a simple math problem. Think about it...
$50/hour X 8 hours/day X 5 days/week = $2,000/week (this doesn't even account for the fact that you would probably work more than 8 hours per day and 5 days per week in such a position)
$2,000/week X 50 weeks/year = $100,000/year (you obviously wouldn't work for 50 weeks in Arizona, so you might need to move around a bit, but hey you're getting 2 weeks vacation, which is more than many Americans could imagine)
Okay, so you're making $100,000/year, not too bad. You might wonder, how on earth could John McCain dare someone to even consider taking a job where they would earn a paltry $100,000/year?
Well, let's put things into context...
If you're John McCain, and you feel that you need to make in excess of $5,000,000/year in order to be wealthy, then $100,000/year would only be 2% of what you make, and honestly would seem preposterous.
Think about it, if you're the typical American, making $26,036/year (in 2006, the median income per household member in the U.S. was $26,036), someone making 2% of what you make (or $520.72/year) would be destitute.
So, from his perspective, an income of $100,000/year is unimaginable, and not something any hard working American could possibly consider accepting.
It is a very sad and truly unbelievable state of affairs when the per capita median income in our country is only 26.036% of the annual salary that John McCain thinks would be unacceptable to most Americans ($100,000).
These are the sort of hard numbers and simple facts that WILL resonate with most Americans. If you're listening (Obama staffers), grab this video of John McCain fuming at a hard working American who would even consider working for $100,000/year, and run with it. This not only shows that he is out of touch with nearly all Americans, but also illustrates his temper and lack of respect for others.
