Right now a lot of us are struggling to wrap our heads around McCain's VP pick and also testing the waters for possible torpedo runs.
So far it seems the most salient points are:
- She's got no experience on the national scale
- She's being investigated for corruption
Now these things are fine to point out on their own but they're slippery. Many of the attacks that are open could just as easily be used against us and are hard to work into the general picture we've been trying to paint of McCain.
But as has been so often the case this cycle, Sullivan nails it.
The more I think about it, the more staggered I am by the pick. It's totally about electioneering (misguidedly, I'd hazard, but I don't know enough about her to know yet) and fundamentally unserious about governing.
Whatever your personal opinions of him, he's onto something here. This pick shows a fundamental disrespect for the Presidency. It's a perfect example of a man putting his desire to win ahead of his desire to lead. The VP should about more than pleasing a base or gathering media attention.
Barack Obama is running on the idea that judgement trumps experience. He puts Biden's experience behind him to help him fill the gaps. The onus is now on McCain to articulate just what x factor Ms. Palin brings to the table, other than the fact that she is well liked by the crowd at Commentary.
