This morning, several houses were raided by the police, with warrants issued by the Ramsey County police department, apparently with joint cooperation from the St. Paul police, the Minneapolis police and the Hennepin County police. (St. Paul, where the RNC will be held, is in Ramsey, Mpls is in Hennepin.)
I just came back from interviewing a member of the household of one of the houses raided at approx. 8am this morning. He was there when the police burst in, guns drawn, breaking down two doors and leading three people away in handcuffs. As of 4pm when this interview takes place, they were still in jail.
One of his speculations is that the police can hold people without charging them for 36 hours. Since that period doesn't begin until Tuesday morning (the office is closed Labor Day) that means they can hold people until Wednesday evening.
Full interview, unedited: Alex (mp3, 8:57).
Developing story, with pictures, on Baron Dave's LiveJournal. I will eventually add this to my podcasts on the Shockwave Radio Theater podcast page which already has much coverage as well as archival material.
UPDATE: I just (8pm) got off the phone with the Minneapolis police, a friendly Police Information Officer. I asked how long the five arrested people could be held if they weren't charged. According to him (and he checked with someone), the Rule of Criminal Procedure applies, and they could be held as late as Wednesday noon. That's the maximum they can be held without charges if they don't make bail, etc.
