By our national soccer team. Of course, we aren't going to repeat the Bay Of Pigs. Cuba doesn't have any oil. Cuba does have other, um, attractions, but nothing a Republican would invade over.
The US men's national soccer team will play a World Cup qualifier this Saturday in Cuba, 8 PM Eastern time.
US fans will have to watch it on ESPN Classic or Galavision because a futile policy that dates from the Kennedy administration is still in effect.
Some US journalists are braving a hurricane of Red Tape to make the trip.
Some US journalists are already there and have some interesting observations:
The plane was two-thirds full and included bible teachers, families with Cuban roots and three morally suspect soccer journalists
Like, if you're friends with powerful Cubans or Republicans, or better yet, Cuban Republicans; the embargo doesn't seem to apply.
It looks like Landon Donovan, the player in the picture below does not read Dailykos.com or he would know that Cuba does have Internet access. High speed is coming soon.
It sounds stupid, but it'll be interesting just to see if they have the Internet or newspapers to the outside world
Speaking of The Cuban Internet, , I didn't see a lot about the game yet. (Don't click on this link if you work for the federal government.) Car rental agencies,I found but not much about the game.
Maybe soccer isn't a big deal in beisbol-crazed Cuba? Maybe the last 2 times Cuban times have visited the US, some of their players have defected. More here.
Well, it's going to be an interesting game and an all-too brief glimpse into a place that our current administration (and previous Democratic administrations) force us to experience vicariously.
It's a chance to scream, "Go USA!" for a couple of hours without feeling guilty about it. Seeing as competence & decency have been non-existant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue since Jan 20, 2001, you have to take patriotic feelings when you can find them.
Well, a few people in Washington know what they are doing.
