We never know when history will call us to action, nor what we will do. Yesterday my Mom answered that question. Will you?
My mom always told me that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. She is not forth coming with how she votes or engaging people in a political dialogue even though she is hyper informed on political issues, having married a political junkie and given birth to one, me.
However yesterday she, like many in the country hit a breaking point.
Like many people my mom has been hit by the Republican economy. My dad is a cancer survivor and has paid outrageous amounts in health care and my brother, a surveyor has been hit by the ripple effect of the housing crises and is on the brink of losing his business.
One particular neighbor has been very helpful; however, she always shares her republican, fox news, information on life. My mother has always walked away or said she preferred to not talk politics.
That all changed the other day. Her neighbor came over to offer help and said, "can you believe Obama called Paulin a pig." My mom pointed out that Obama had not called Paulin a pig, which her neighbor didn't believe. After a heated discussion she informed my mother for the second time that she didnt know what she was talking about. My mother said I dont just watch Fox news, I turn to many sources including various newspapers and TV stations. To show the bubble land that the kool aid drinkers live in she said it was not true that Clinton had left the country with a surplus.
My mom did this because of what I had told her. She said, "I thought about what you have said, and I wasn't going to allow the lies to go unchallenged." I was going to stand.
Like many of us that have now challenged our neighbors, co-workers, and friends, the time has come to be the true patriots and stand up for our country.
Yes we can!
