Country First? Really, Senator McCain? Has any candidate for president ever chosen such an unqualified extremist as a running mate?
During the Alaska gubernatorial debate, Sarah Palin stated her position on abortion clearly -- that she doesn't believe a woman should be allowed to receive an abortion after being raped. Old news, I know.
But then she was asked how she would react if her own daughter was raped. Without missing a beat, Palin heartlessly recited her talking point:
"Again, I would choose life."
The abortion exchange begins about 5:30 in:
No pause. No anguish at contemplating such a nightmare scenario. (Unlike how her opponents reacted.)
Flashback to 1988: during the presidential debate, CNN anchor Bernard Shaw asked Michael Dukakis if he would favor the death penalty if Kitty Dukakis was raped and murdered. Dukakis' unemotional, policy-wonk response may have cost him the election.
Something else about Palin during the Alaska debate -- she actually tried at first to evade the initial question about abortion and rape. She knew it was an unpopular position, even in red-state Alaska. But she couldn't help herself. Sarah Palin is an extremist.
Again, what does this say about John McCain's judgment? What does it say about his honor? He has none. McCain picked a VP who he knows is far out of the mainstream and unprepared for the job. He doesn't care. John McCain would rather lose his honor than lose an election.
