It seems this year the only issue the Republicans want to talk about is the practice of earmarks. While I am of the opinion that earmarks aren't ALWAYS bad, I do believe they should be under very close scrutiny to prevent wasteful spending. This leads me to the topic of this diary. Previously I have written two diaries about the race to replace Representative Duncan Hunter in California's 52nd district. The two major candidates are Duncan D. Hunter, the Republican son of the current congressman, and Mike Lumpkin, a retired Navy Seal who served in the United States Military for 21 years.
To bring you up to speed on the race in this very conservative district, here is the link to the first diary I wrote on the subject:
Lumpkin for Congress in CA-52
Now the reason I am writing today is because I have just received information compiled by the Lumpkin Campaign about where Duncan Hunter Jr. is receiving his contributions from. This information was gathered from various sources, and the PDF released by the campaign can be accessed here if you have questions regarding whether the source is legitimate:
Hunter's Buddies
As you can see if you clicked on the link, Hunter Jr. has received $128,000 in contributions from people who work for or are associated with companies whom his father has granted earmarks for during his time in the House of Representatives. This encompasses 83 donors from 35 different companies. I'll give you some examples.
Boeing received earmarks to the tune of 40 million from Hunter. People who work for or are associated with Boeing have contributed in total $5,250 to Hunter Jr's campaign to replace his retiring father and establish a legacy in California's 52nd district. Lockheed Martin has received $1,247,800,000 in earmarks, and people associated with Lockheed have contributed over $6,000 dollars to the son's campaign. Rolls Royce received over 2 million dollars of our hard earned taxpayer money from Hunter, and people associated have given $4,500 dollars to help ensure that Hunter Jr. continues his father's proud legacy.
Folks, the list goes on and on. The PDF link I posted has the complete information of who exactly these contributors are, as well as dozens of pages of records from which the information was gathered.
Can anyone now honestly claim that Hunter Jr., should he win, will go to Congress and ignore the interests of all these donors? Will he ignore the inevitable pressure his father (who plans to become a lobbyist) will put on him to continue to vote the way he would have? Will he be voting on behalf of the people of East San Diego County or the people of Lockheed, Rolls Royce, and Boeing?
In a year where the Republicans want to make a point that they don't like earmarks, Hunter Jr. is even running against one of his own party's platforms. CA-52 is without doubt a fairly conservative district, but this isn't about Republican or Democrat. This is about preventing the formation of a Political dynasty which has proven to be corrupt and unhealthy for out district and for America. So I ask you, if you have any money to spare, even $5, donate to the Lumpkin campaign. Even if you aren't in CA-52, who would you rather have voting on issues that will effect the entire nation? Donate based on that preference. Hunter is funded by corporations. Lets show them that they are no match against a determined group of people who is angered by them continually buying their way into our government and taking our Tax Money!
