I watched Meet the Press this morning and saw for the umpteenth time our former president being interviewed. I was very disturbed by what I saw and the pattern being revealed regarding his feelings about Obama. Clinton is very tepid in his "support" of Obama (if you can really call it that). He can't even come out with clear praise of Senator Biden who supported his wife's candidacy to the bitter end of the campaign as being far superior to Palin. He called McCain a "great man", but could barely get any compliments out of his mouth for Obama.
So I decided to write him a letter, and posted it this morning at his foundation website under the "contact us" link. The following is what I sent him.
If you agree with me, why don't you do the same. This is getting ridiculous. The web address: www.ClintonFoundation.org
By the way have you seen Chris Rock saying he can't believe that Clinton can barely mention Obama's name? So much for being the first "black" president.
Dear President Clinton,
I respectfully write to you regarding your lack of support for the democratic ticket and frightening willingness to let America fall to a dangerous political ideology and corporate elite. I was a staunch supporter of your presidency though all it's vicissitudes. I supported you through scandal and feel you were a very good president in spite of it.
I am a lifelong democrat, and was thrilled to see Senators Obama and Clinton as candidates for the presidency. I know that Senator Clinton would have been an outstanding president, and I believe she will do great work for our country in her continuing career. She may be president someday and that would be great for America.
However, I am very disappointed by your obvious lack of enthusiasm for the Obama- Biden ticket. Your reticence is stunning, and it may just hurt Obama's chances. I hope and pray not. At this point if he wins it will not be with your help which is very sad. If he wins he will do so with the help of the American people and his campaign.
I now view myself and all who see the danger facing our country by the hard right as soldiers (metaphorically speaking) who must step up to the plate to win back our democracy. I don't even call the other party republicans anymore. This is a relatively new and frankly scary party that Cheney and Rove lead with Bush as their puppet. Remember when Hillary called out the "right wing conspiracy". I thought she was a bit extreme at the time. Now I believe she was right.
McCain is a morally bankrupt and cynical politician, not a great man. True heroes don't need to brag endlessly about themselves. That is narcissism and self-aggrandizement pure and simple. Research on this man reflects an unstable character, someone who is an intellectual lightweight who rode his family's coattails through his long career beginning with his entry to Annapolis through connections (not unlike Bush). He is a man whos life is riddled with stories that reflect impulsivity, poor judgement, and at this point outright psychological instability. McCain supports the Bush regime, the neo-con philosophy, and he has sold his soul to the devil to get elected. Perhaps he bucked the system at one time, but his lurching drunken candidacy shows he will do anything to get into the White House whether it means selling out or not.
The Palin selection is just one example of this. He has cynically chosen a running mate who he knows appeases the right wing religious base but who is absolutely not prepared or capable to be the V.P. much less to lead the country if something happens to McCain. "Country first", yeah right. "Great man", sure, just great.
You are seen as a brilliant man, I've always thought you were. You must see that if McCain-Palin are elected this will probably spell the end of America as a force for good in the world and very possibly the end of our democracy as we know it. Our democracy has been trampled, and this may very well be our last best chance to save it.
President Clinton, how could YOU abandon your base. I heard you say something recently on a TV interview, that you would be okay no matter what happens with the econony and current crisis (as will wealthy/investor class Americans). Forgive me if I misquoted you on thispoint but I’m pretty sure you said something like that. Well you may well be all right; Bush and McCain and Cheney and Rove will be just fine. But the rest of us won’t be okay, and it is time for you to step up to the plate and say so. It is great your foundation is doing so much work for African nations, to alleviate AIDS in the world, and many other worthy projects. But the most pressing project to be dealt with is this: TO SAVE AMERICA.
Please get back to the facts and to helping get our candidates elected before it is too late.
