Hillary is offering a continuation of the cycle of political garbage that has haunted us for decades.
Bill Clinton was one of the most divisive presidents of the last century. Republicans hated him ... I mean they HATED him. They hated him so much that they impeached him over something so ridiculously minor that is bordered on the insane.
But, nonetheless, things were ok for many people during the Clinton years. The economy was strong, we built up a surplus and we lived through relative peace.
But here’s the thing: Many of Bill Clinton’s accomplishments have been eradicated by the Bush administration. The surplus is long, long gone (it’s hard to imagine it ever existed in the first place), the economy is a wreck and peace has certainly not been given a chance in this decade.
Bill Clinton told us to not stop thinking about tomorrow, but in reality he was only working for today.
The reason Bill Clinton’s legacy has been torn down is because he was so divisive. He built no lasting coalition, he changed nothing about politics and he created an atmosphere of vitriol and spite. That atmosphere was exploited by the Bush administration.
This is what Hillary Clinton is offering. She is selling four or eight more years of divisiveness and truculence. Sure, she will dismantle some of the worst components of the Bush era (many of which she played a role in, by the way). Sure, things will get a little better for some of us. But her four or eight years of the same old politics and capitulation will just lead to a GOP backlash. When she leaves office, the Democratic Party will be in disarray and fixing to lose to another reactionary, hateful down-home Republican boy, who will dismantle any gains made during Hillary’s years in the White House. The circle of political life will continue, unimpeded, and nothing will change.
This is why we need someone like Barack Obama; a man who offers a new way and who is not hindered by 20 years of partisan garbage. He may not be the most experienced, but he certainly has the least baggage and the most vision.
