The last few weeks has brought a lot of disagreements between Democrats about who should be the Democratic Presidential nominee. All the focus on the Democratic contenders left me little time to blog about the people we can all agree to hate: the Republicans. The local paper of Springfield, MO (the city in which I attend college) is called the Springfield News Leader. Here are a few highlights from the opinion section.
Enjoy!
Michael G. Beck writes,
Are we not about to elect the chief executive of the executive branch? There has never been a more experienced executive or manager to be a candidate for president than Mitt Romney.
And it continues
With Romney, you get a scandal-free, experienced executive, a family man and a man of faith. Who has been more qualified to be president?
I would agree with Mr. Beck's conclusion that there is no one more experienced to be President except for the fact that other people exist!
Although I did enjoy this response comment
Yes, God help us if one of those danged Clintons gets in there and balances the budget, reduces the national debt, competently oversees our military and cleans up the environment. That would really suck.
I was very lucky to find this letter titled "Book Explains About Religion." I never knew someone had the EXACT same questions as I did about Mormonism.
However, I developed a multitude of questions concerning the Mormon belief which non-Mormons usually do. Why do they have to wear their "Mormon garments" (special underwear)? Why do they have to have some portion of this garment touching their body when they bathe? Why is it that only those who have strictly conformed to the Mormon doctrines and dress are allowed to enter the inner rooms at a Mormon Temple? Why is their heaven divided into three sections, 1st Glory, 2nd Glory and 3rd Glory?
And just when you thought there was no source in the world that could explain why Mormons wear special underwear.
When I saw a letter with the header "Holiday at farm was treat" I knew I was in for a very special treat. I knew I was in for an even more special treat when I discovered this article was a response to a letter called "Real farms easy to find in Ozarks."
Although we live in an area surrounded with agriculture, very few "city" kids any longer have a connection to farm life.
The horror!
Mr. Clay A. Rogers may be playing the role of the Grinch with his letter. I can only hope that, like the Grinch, his heart grows bigger and he sees the joy the Rutledge-Wilson Farm is giving, and will continue to give, to all of us.
I was completely S H O C K E D that Mr. Clay A. Rogers did not realize the joy of the Rutledge-Wilson Farm. Aren't you?
The citizens of Springfield are a concerned bunch though. This studentalthough not particularly concerned about the recession, the war, the state of America's interests in the world, was completely concerned that the musical accomplishments of Central High School were NOT being adequately appreciated.
As a three-year orchestra student at Central, I must say I am appalled by the unwarranted and scathing "review" submitted in response to the wonderful academic and musical accomplishments by Central students.
My criticism of this letter may be a little harsh. Still, the letter goes on to detail the accomplishments of the Central music program and ends with this line,
I do not believe any one person's opinion will change what we here at Central believe; it is the effort and love you put into what you do that matters most.
So ... it's the love you put into your music that makes it good? Need I say...huh?
Ok thiswas just bizarre
...the Ozarks are still made up of ancient families with their own burial grounds or plots. Grandma is still nearby, and all the cousins, uncles and aunts probably never left the area. When you have family, the Ozarker may feel: "Who needs strangers."
The letter was called, "Springfield picked for retirement." What is an Ozarker? Really though.
This was the MOTHER of all letters. In, "Americans needs to election leaders who are Christian" Clif Moudy writes,
Taking God out of the schools. It is a sad day when we have gone from being able to say a prayer, to removing the Ten Commandments from our public schools. When more than 70 percent of Americans claim to be Christians, how did we let this happen?
How did we!
Now I see that the call to remove, In God We Trust, from our money, has actually been put into effect. They have taken the words from the face of the new dollar coin and actually put them in the smallest place they could, the edge. The edge of the coin is what wears out the quickest. This is one more example of where America is placing God. Making him smaller and smaller until he is eliminated completely.
I have been saying for YEARS that if we take God off of our money he will completely disappear. There are 2 things I know about the world
- Each time you say you don't believe in fairies a fairy dies.
- If you take God's likeness off money God dies.
And of course we are being punished for this banishment of God as Clif so academically notes
I know I can't be the only one that sees more and more catastrophic events happening to America and Americans. We are having incredible fires, floods, droughts and terrors striking at America. America is the last great superpower in the world and believe you me, the world is watching us all the time. The rise of sexual immorality and the assault against the family is staggering. America once had a hedge surrounding it, placed there by God, that protected us. Now that we are throwing God out of everything, I believe God is saying, if you don't want me, then you don't get me, and the hedge is coming down.
Clif, buddy, you seem a little uptight. Perhaps you should try a little sexual immorality.
Friends, it is time to take control of our country and get rid of every judge that rules against God and the purity of family.
Thank you for calling me your friend.
Yes, we need God in our schools and in our nation. We need politicians that live the Christ-like way that the title of Christian, that they proclaim to be, dictates.
Amen.
