Unless they're using reverse psychology, in which case, maybe they fear Obama more.
I can't decide.
All I know is that the Greenville News had the audacity to endorse Barack Obama today.
Given the nastiness of the debate here right now, I doubt anyone will believe me when I say the Greenville News would never, ever, ever try to help the Democrats. As a Southerner might say, They wouldn't spit on us if we were on fire.
This is a "Surge-is-working," "we-love-George-Bush" "The economy-is-strong" paper.
They've dutifully run every possible Republican nominee up the flag pole in the last few months, hoping someone will get some traction and take off, and no one has.
Their inflated ideas about the wonders of Fred Thompson alone was worthy of becoming stand-up comedy, it was so funny.
I'm sure Obama fans will be here touting this as something wonderful for their candidate (and I have nothing against Obama, am just tired of all the candidate diaries) but I promise you, this is not sincere and it's not a good thing.
The Greenville News would only do this in hopes of helping Republicans.
I've already shot off an LTE:
To the Editor:
You can't be serious? The Greenville News endorsing a Democrat for President?
Surely you realize every Democrat in Greenville knows you're one of the biggest cheerleaders the Republican Party ever had, dutifully parroting every Republican Talking Point. (Your ridiculous attempts to portray Fred Thompson as the Republican savior was one of the funniest things in print in years.) Lest we forget:
The Surge is Working.
The war in Iraq is just and necessary.
George Bush never lied.
His economic policies of tax cuts and never paying the debt he's run up is good.
Should I go on?
I can only conclude that word came down from on high from the Republicans would rather run against Barack Obama than Hillary Clinton in November, and you are once again doing your part to help. Nothing else could convince me that you would ever endorse a Democrat, except you thinking you're somehow helping the Republicans.
They're certainly going to need all the help you can give them, given the fact that the current crop of Republican candidates couldn't even excite the base in South Carolina. What did you say in your own story? Or did I have to look elsewhere to find the numbers? That 575,000 people voted in the South Carolina Republican primary in 2000, and only 440,000 or so people voted in last Saturday's Republican Primary?
I don't think even the Greenville News can save them this year, though I'm sure you'll do your part.
Sincerely,
Teresa Hill
You can read the endorsement for yourself here, including the paper saying we really don't agree with Democrats on anything, but here, we'll take Obama.

My disclaimers: I don't hate Hillary, but don't like her campaign tactics so far. Like Obama, but if he can't stand up to Hillary's attacks, he can't win in November. I like John Edwards, but we know how his campaign is going. IOW, I don't know who I'll vote for on Saturday.
