First off, this is not a hit piece on our three candidates or a piece for Gravel. It's about something that's going on that needs your attention, your time, and some small amounts of efforts. But without you picking up a phone and doing it, then thsoe three candidates, irrespective of who wins likely won't win.
On Monday this story came out in the Miami Herald. That was a start.
Browning said that once Florida switches over to paper ballot systems that then the recount rules should be then changed that during a manual recount that all ballots are counted. Right now if the margin falls under one half of one percent it triggers a machine recount. If that recount shows that the margin is under one quarter of one percent then there is a manual recount of overvotes and undervotes only. (Which is of course useless with electronic machines since the manual recount would be the same.)
Do you need to think about 2000 anymore? No? Well guess what happened yesterday?
Some people in Miami-Dade County had their parties change.
Others were totally disenfranchised, and still more folks
Among the affected: Miami Herald Theater Critic Christine Dolen, who voted at precinct T010 on Pine Island Road in Davie -- or at least tried.
When she checked into the polling place, Dolen received confirmation of her status as a registered Democrat.
She cast her vote on the property-tax amendment and, then, to her dismay, discovered that the ballot for the Democratic presidential primary never appeared on her machine.
'I told the woman who had activated the machine for me, and she said, `You already voted -- sorry,' '' Dolen said. 'Then, I found the polling place supervisor, who said, `I think that's all Democrats get to vote on, since the presidential vote doesn't count.' ''
That is not true. The national Democratic Party, punishing Florida for its early primary, stripped the state of all of its convention delegates, but party members were encouraged to make their selections anyway.
'I went from person to person and basically got a response of, `Sorry. Nothing to be done.' Needless to say, I'm furious.''
THAT'S why Democrats won't win. Every election it's been Florida, or Ohio or some other state. It's time YOU step up and start helping prevent this. Call the Florida Secretary of State Kurt Browning and encourage him to go through with his plan. Encourage him to use any method with a paper trail, so a proper recount can be done. It's up to you whether we win in '08 or not.
