During this election season, we have heard many political figures, including John Edwards, Barack Obama, and to some degree Mitt Romney, expressing the need for change in Washington. After all this discussion of change, Rudy Giuliani wanted people to ask themselves what type of change did they want. This got me thinking.
Change is an important element in the world today. Change can often times improve a situation, but there is always a chance of the opposite happening. All things can be associated with change, politics, school, daily habits, and even luck can change hands in an instant. Many people say that a change is needed in the United States.
Change is a important part of everyday life, and in politics sometimes change is needed. I agree with Senator Obama, and Senator Edwards that Washington does need to be changed. But Mayor Giuliani's question did make me consider what change really means to me. In what way should Washington change? What would be the best options for changing, or fixing our government? A change is needed in American government as soon as possible. The change should not be too momentous, but just enough to make everything right again.
As we begin to emerge ourselves in the talks of a presidential election, the ideas of change have become rampant across the United States. People are asking themselves, 'Should we stay the course, or should we make a change in leadership?'. There is a simple answer, we do not need a change in the style of government, but a change is needed in the system of democratic government. This republic, the United States, is not working and a new direction is needed for America to be a stronger and more united country. To begin, instead of a president, a dictator should be put into place at the top of government. A dictator carries a lot of power because he is the all powerful authority in a nation and as history tells us, if one goes against a dictator, bad things will happen, for example Stalin's secret police in 1930s and 1940s Russia. Therefore, the people will show more respect for the country and this will make us stronger and more united in front of the world. A democracy is not stable enough and if we keep on this path, we will surely be one of the weakest nations on the earth.
Then, the United States should get rid of the Congress, both the House of Representatives and the Senate. All that the Congress serves as is a blockage of all of the bills that need to be passed in the United States, they serve no practical purpose. The 535 people who make up the two houses of the Congress could become loyal citizens of the dictator, but if they do not, and are seen as protesters to the ruler, they will be sent to prison immediately. Also, the Supreme Court should be disbanded, the dictator would have the final word, so their jurisdiction would not matter in any case. Therefore, there is no reason for checks and balances. One person makes the decisions and that will be the way it goes, no matter what any other party tries to say or do. This would get rid of the confusing method of bills being passed, blocked, and vetoed. If the one in charge feels their should be a law, he can enact it, then if it does not work, he can change his mind and it will be forgotten.
Of course muscle is shown by a dictator and yes, strength is also shown, a strength that can not be equaled in muscle by a democracy. The people are united around the fear of their leader and the power he presents. However, do we really want to be ruled by fear and led without question. Maybe there should just be a change in the president, not a change in government. If there was a change, we may destroy 231 years of the honored and respected history of the United States. This government is a republic, where the power of leader is not always shown with muscle, but if he has the people supporting him and that showing unity and strength, he will have power through hope and belief in a government that works to protect its citizens, not one that intimidates and belittles them. Democracy is equal to the passion of life, the opportunity of liberty, and the pursuit of all happiness to everyone. However, when it is abused and taken advantage of, we forget the opportunities we have under this type of government. If this freedom is damaged and destroyed by people taking advantage of it, a dictatorship may be right around the corner. If we do not appreciate what we have been given, and continue to follow blindly, it will all be taken away at the drop of a dime. Change is needed to inspire and invigorate the population to make government work for all of us. Question authority and become change, just following blindly leads to a frightening and dangerous "reality".
