If McCain's divisive rhetoric leads to actual acts of violence, then we all, as Americans, need to call for him to step down out of respect for the country.
You do not lead a country if you split its people, if you turn them against each other. This ideological war he is waging, this thinly veiled race baiting; it needs to stop. It is not worthy of the crucial time we find ourselves in, nor is it acceptable at any other time.
John McCain's silence in speaking out against these comments, his instance on letting these people have free reign; it speaks more for his true priorities than any speech or slogan. A man cannot claim to hold "country first" when he is willing to run for President on the backs of an angry violent mob. He cannot claim to support "country first" when he is willing to send that country into ruin just to get into office. He would split the electorate and alienate whatever congress that will be seated post-election, and for what? A title?
McCain has shown to be increasingly lacking in any understanding that he will have to actually govern all Americans if he is to be elected President. This leads me to believe that he is not considering that he will have to and it makes me worried about his health. He is acting like a man on a kamikaze run to the White House; a last ditch effort to reach the highest title in the land and to hell with anything that comes after once he reaches his prize. Does John McCain expect that he will even make it through his first term? Or, perhaps just as frightening, does he not care about the damage he does to this nation as long as he ends up its "leader" come November 5th?
For reference, I was raised in a Republican household yet I've always been more moderate than either most liberals or conservatives. I truly and honestly wish for a Republican party that can restructure itself to no longer be controlled and manipulated by a radical ideological base too blind to see, or too uncaring of the damage it does to the freedoms of this nation while still deluding itself into believing that it is the only true voice for that freedom.
However, I've gotten to the point where I cannot look upon more than a few members of the Republican party with any sort of lasting respect, and Sen John McCain has betrayed any respect I may have had for him with the despicable and destructive way he is running his campaign.
I'm sure I'm not the only independent voter who is feeling this way.
