The food fight is on.
Conservative feathers were more than a little ruffled this past March when Richard Ellis, VP of Communications for McDonald’s USA joined the board of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Marshalling the vast forces of the Values Voters, the The American Family Association, based in Mississippi, instituted a boycott against McDonald’s, sending right-wingers experiencing a Mac attack to other outlets. Perish the thought, fundie children, of indulging your appetites with a Happy Meal. There was no longer anything gay to be found under the Golden Arches.
At that time, Heidi M. Barker, senior director of media relations, said, "McDonald's is indeed a Corporate Partner and Organizational Ally of NGLCC. Our vice president of U.S. communications, Richard Ellis, was recently elected to its board of directors."
Fast forward to October, 2008. Tony Perkins’ of the Christian-right Family Research Council, announced that the five month boycott against McDonald’s was over. It is now safe to buddy up to Ronald McDonald for the company has announced Ellis’ resignation from the GLCC board. In an October 10th Action Alert Update, the Family Research Council showered praise upon its minions for having forced McDonald's hand.
No matter that Ellis had publicly outed these folks as "haters." All that does matter is that the collective power of the"haters" has come to the rescue, declaring victory against the liberal support of homosexual sin.
Ellis resigned from the GLCC board and was reassigned to McDonald’s Canada, the company stating this to be a "personal decision." When contacted, contrary to their earlier words, a spokesman for McDonald’s now says, "It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald's remains neutral on same-sex marriage or any 'homosexual agenda' as defined by the American Family Association." But the truth of the matter is; the GLCC never lobbied for same-sex marriage.
Oh well, two can play this game, meaning it’s time now for liberals to play the boycott game. We’ve seen the right threaten Ford and, gasp, even Wal-Mart for similar ethical lapses of recognizing gay rights. There are many other socially responsible companies, such as Kodak, IBM and dozens more who will end up on the wrong end of the AFA and Family Research Council hit list if we don’t put a stop to their corporate blackmail now.
So, please, let McDonald's know you'll be taking your appetites elsewhere until the company agrees to climb back aboard the train bound for human rights.
