One need only look back at recent Democratic Presidential tickets to see that southerners have been integral parts of the campaigns. Kerry had Edwards. Gore was the one. Clinton and Gore was a Doublemint commercial. Jimmy Carter was from Georgia and JFK picked LBJ to be his running mate. However, for the first time in decades, a Democrat is predicted to take the White House without either of the top two being from the south.
The south may not being rising anytime soon. After the shenanigans of Newt Gingrich and his Contract On America, Tom Delay, Bill Frist, Mark Foley, and the list goes on, America seems to have lost some of the allure southern politicians held over them. Barack Obama, a Northern Senator from Illinois, has chosen Joe Biden, another Northern Senator as his running mate. Not only are they both Northerners, Obama is of African-American decent. This cannot sit well with the traditional southern states and that is reflected in the polls. However, there are soeme defectors from the Dixieland Express. North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida are all leaning Obama/Biden. Incomprehensively, West Virginia and Georgia are even considered to be in play.
People have been giving this election the monikers of historic and monumental. However, it is even more historic and monumental than we originally thought. We have two Liberal, Northern Senators poised to lead this country into the New Millenium and things could not look brighter. Take some time to day to reflect on how far this country has come. The yoke of southern oppression is off our country for the first time in decades and things could not be better.
