Because you can never have enough good stories about Obama draws voters from all walks of life...
My mom and stepdad are staunch Republicans. They live in an upscale retirement development in Palm Desert. They have voted for just about every Republican for decades, and ideologically could not be further from the progressive ideals this site favors. They even voted for George W. Bush, twice.
Beginning early this year, I sent Mom materials on Obama, and conversed regularly with her about the need for a new direction in this country, and how Obama would bring us honest, caring, intelligent leadership. She agreed. Over time, I discovered (from other family members) that she was openly supporting Barack Obama since the middle of the primary season, thanks in some part to my conversations with her.
The other day Mom went to church in Palm Desert and encountered one of their neighbor friends. The neighbor, an Obama supporter as well, reported that she had found "fake" dog poop in her mailbox the previous day, which she believed was a purposeful misdeed in response to the Obama yard sign she has in her yard.
My mom and stepdad were incensed at this anonymous, cowardly act against their neighbor. So my stepdad, an Air Force veteran, went to the print shop and made his own sign to augment the Obama-Biden sign Mom had recently bought. Here is the new and improved sign outside my Mom's house:

Now, keep in mind, this is a neighborhood where you would never find a Democratic Party candidate's sign before this year. My mom's community is the West Coast equivalent of the Florida retirement communities that Sarah Silverman is targeting with her Great Schlep campaign. If it can work with my Mom, it can work in Florida. To all of you considering your own Great Schleps, keep fighting the good fight!
