I just saw the preview of McCain's Letterman appearance tonight on Olbermann. I'm glad that Keith did this so now maybe I can just go to bed tonight instead of waiting up to watch Letterman.
This is a diary for myself, but feel free to comment if you'd like.
"I screwed up..." this was McCain's response to dissing Letterman's show for Katie Couric, and he actually said it twice. Those were probably three of the most frightening words I've heard in a long time...
I'll explain.
The clip on Olbermann's broadcast recorded an almost deafening response from the studio audience in support of McCain when he made the admission, and he clearly reveled in the attention. It was enough to actually make him repeat it with a similar response.
I've been devoting a pretty good chunk of my life to fighting the last seven years of George W. Bush, and his penchant and dare I say Republican conventional wisdom for never admitting mistakes or apologizing. This, in my opinion, has ultimately been their downfall. I have been consistently dumbfounded over the years that they don't get that a simple and sincere apology would have gone a long way to keeping them in power. I have taken a large degree of comfort in the fact that they never seem to get this...
And now John McCain, whether he really meant it or not, seems to have stumbled upon this. He has history here also... he virtually prostrated himself over the Keating five and somehow saved his career. God help us all if he begins apologizing for Bush...
Don't worry, this is not some type of concern troll diary... I have the perfect solution for Barack if the McCain campaign attempts to run with this... simply, and magnanimously accept his apology and move on!
