Here is what we are up against. Just look at the level of commitment of the grass-roots homophobia behind Proposition 8 in California. From the Sacramento Bee, we learn of the Patterson family, a middle-class family with a 10-year-old Honda and a modest 3-bedroom house, who dug deep and came up with $50,000 out of their personal savings to help eliminate the right of marriage for same-sex couples in California. Another family, the Nielsens, ponied up $35,000.
They say that they are doing it for their children' futures.
Overall, the article says that since July $22.8 million has been raised for the Proposition, with 40% coming from members of the Mormon church. This is a real political movement, driven by individuals who deeply and passionately believe in the rightness of their cause. That this cause is the destruction of countless happy families with loving same-sex parents raising kids does not seem to trouble them.
We have had some good news lately, but this is past time to panic. Right now, philanthropist Steve Bing together with Equality California have ponied up $1,000,000 in matching grants for any donation to www.noonprop8.com between now and midnight Sunday. The org will use it to air this ad:
In addition, if you are in CA, you can volunteer to do canvassing, and if you do not live in CA, you can still do phonebanking.
Let's whip this monstrosity.
