This will be fairly brief. Mostly this diary is intended as food for thought on the topical discussion of anti-Americans and anti-Americanism, in the spirit of the perspective that may be induced by time and history.
Anti-Americans in American history: men who in their time were thought by the established powers to have lost their way, or to have sorely erred in their capacity of judgement, while in a subsequent era in the life of the Republic saw their image, reputation, accomplishments, and their principles, at least in part, at least in some circles, re-established:
Aaron Burr
John C Calhoun
John Brown
Robert E Lee
Charles Beard
Richard Nixon
Perhaps universal agreement cannot fall to these figures. Probably there are many others of similar weight who ought also be remembered. Let's see.
EDIT: I should note that part of my purpose here is an attempt to define, in response to Congresswoman Bachmann's failure today to define, what an anti-American is, and to show that no one's action, as far as I know, in the present day is comparable to these examples. Lastly, I propose that the so called "Lost Causes" epitomized by these examples were not entirely lost on the history of this nation (otherwise we would probably not know of them today). Some have seen their actions justified, or at least better understood, by their passage into history.
