Unions are coming together for Obama!
Last night my husband (staunch union man) and I had dinner with some dear old friends.
They an African-American couple, he's a writer, she's a visual artist. Our main concern throughout this campaign has, of course, been racism, followed by fear for Obama's safety and the fear that some way will be found to stop Obama. The subject of racism was raised again last night, but the mood was different and we could see truth rising.
We met for dinner in a south Oakland County restaurant. Dennis and I arrived first and chose a table near the front windows. The table next to us had a middle-aged white couple and the mother (I think of the husband), who was going on and on about Obama and why her son should vote for him! It was terrific!
Our friends arrived, we ate dinner, and got up to leave, and noticed a table of about 8 people all w/Obama buttons or shirts. Coming down our street, the Obama signs have finally arrived. Things were looking better.
We got home and I sat down to Daily Kos and watched the barn-raising Trumka (sp?) speech. This morning a link on TPM pointed me to the WV miners walkout. After years of being trampled on the unions are still the strongest voice of the working men and women. They know racism is a tool of the power structure and won't fall for the divide and conquer gambit again.
