Humanity
I think white people standing up for change deserve a round of applause. Things are not the way they used to be and really there has always been white people willing to stand up for what is right. We can't forget slavery might have lasted even longer without the help of abolitionist. We can't forget the underground rail road may not have freed so many slaves had it not been for whites willing to feed and clothe the runaway in the still of the night. We can't forget the freedom schools in which white women travled from north to south to teach. We can't forget the white philanthropist who helped establish the NAACP. We can not forget our common humanity. In these final weeks of the campaigns, when the racism and divisiveness is mounting daily, we can not forget the scores of white people who have supported obama from day 1; who have embraced him as their brother; who have listened closely to Dr King and made a choice based on the content of character not the color of skin. A round of applause for white people who are not drowning in white guilt; who are not suffering from white supremacy; who are not living in fear. And who will not be made to fear.
I cried and cried and cried when I heard that Obama walked into a mostly white diner and some of the patrons declined to shake his hand. I cry when I hear them call him a terroist. I cried when I heard Congress woman Michelle Bachman say with a straight face that she believed him to be anti-american. I cry when they attack his beautiful intelligent wife Michelle, when they claim not to understand what she meant when she said she was really proud. I cry when white democrats say they are undecided. I cry when I realize that racism still exists. I cry from joy that so many people realize the flawed logic of racism. I cry because I can't understand why anyone would think a US Senator, a presidential candidate is anti-american? How can one judge anothers patriotism? It is unmeasurable just like faith is unmeasurable. However, in choosing to serve this country, in helping to create its laws, in debating the merit of bills on senate floors-- is in itself proof of patriotism.
We as americans must stand together and let no one divide us. We can not stand for hate. That is what it truly means to love America. I dont care what color someone is, call them out. Shut them out. I was at debate watching party on my campus. When it ended the one other girl of color came up to me speaking in code. Talking about you know how they are. NO I don't. I do not know who you are talking about and I am not willing to lump anybody into a category simply based on color. All I know is Obama will be the president of the people, all people. It is important to speak so that everyone can hear and understand, no more racially coded talk. If we can learn to communicate with all people, then we can trust each other, love each other, and live in a prosperous and peacful democracy together. At any rate, I just wanted to say thank you. You can not know how much it means to black people to see white people defending and supporting a biracial candidate with such passion and love and respect. Thank you.
