I admit this diary is barely serious.
The McCain-Palin campaign and the RNC keep sending me fundraising letters trying to gin up fear of Barack Obama and giving me a postage paid reply envelope to send back my contribution so that the Republicans can save the world from Barack. (How I came to be on their list is below the fold.)
On each prepaid reply envelope I am told that using my own stamp will save the Republicans "much needed funds." If I can save them money by using my own stamp, I can cost them money by not. (chortle) I used to toss it all in the recycling bin, but it didn't take me long to see that an expense to McCain's campaign is somewhat like a contribution to Obama's, so I started sending the reply envelopes back to the Republicans with nothing inside. Deplete their war chest by letting them pay useless postage...
Years ago I registered as a Republican when that party had both a credible candidate and a complete kook battling neck and neck in the "closed" Republican gubernatorial primary. I was committed to vote for the Democrat in what was expected to be a close November election, but he was unopposed in the Democratic primary. What to do? I registered Republican to cast my primary vote for the nut job, hoping he would win and make it smoother sailing for the Democrat in the fall. Lots has been said about "crossover" voting on both sides of the fence, but hey, it was many, many years ago.
This year I needed to vote in the Democratic primary, so I changed my registration back to Democrat last winter, before there was even a hint of spring in the air. My that felt good! But so far, the completely inept McCain campaign and the RNC have failed to heed my departure from Republican voter rolls. They send me all manner of fundraising requests. These are getting ever more desperate, much to my delight. But they are also getting more and more vitriolic and untrue, and they are really making me angry. These morons and liars want to run the country and they can't even update a simple database or try to tell something close to the truth? Hell, I gave enough to Obama to get on his publicly viewable list and the Republicans still don't notice.
I've gotten so fed up that I started adding some weight to my replies, sending back their postage paid reply envelopes stuffed with as much old newspaper and other junk mail as they could hold, with an occasional note concerning my views on their candidates and tactics.
They keep on coming, these desperate letters needing my cash and thanking me for my Patriotic Support. But yesterday I learned that they spent enough on clothes for Palin and her family to have bought Palin an actual education instead. So it looks like they need clothes instead of cash, and I just can't bear to think of a folksy hockey mom and her wee ones with nothing to wear. We have closets crammed with my wife's old cold-weather things and plenty of clothes the kids have outgrown. I could put about 50 pounds of those in a big box and slap that postage paid envelope on top and ship it to Sarah and her poor kids by First Class Mail. Apparently the need is great. Just in time, today's mail brought not one, but two fresh, new URGENT REQUEST mailings (one is from Sarah herself!!!) with reply envelopes inside, and I do have two very large shipping boxes on hand.
The little ethical enforcer dude on my right shoulder is suggesting that (perhaps) I would be crossing a line. The really fun little fellow on the other shoulder tells me that there is nothing illegal in this and that all is fair in politics, especially when it is vigorously done to the vicious and stupid.
I'll let kossacks decide.
