Proposition 8 is about so much more than equal access to the civil institution of marriage. Proposition 8 is an unapologetic attempt by religious extremists to deny civil rights to a minority group incapable of independently defending itself against encroachments on its freedom. We need your help, right now, to make sure this hateful, discriminatory law fails miserably.
While polls taken as recently as two months ago showed that Prop 8 would probably fail, the latest CBS poll shows that Prop 8 is now likely to pass, with 47% of people intending to vote Yes and 42% intending to vote no. A more recent poll shows Prop 8 passing 52-43. This shift is most likely a result of the fact that the Yes campaign (funded primarily by the Mormon Church and the Knights of Columbus) has millions more than the No campaign (funded primarily by private individuals), and the Yes people have been flooding the airwaves with half-truths and flat out lies regarding the effects of the ballot measure.
Without the help of allies such you, Prop 8 will succeed. Please help make California an egalitarian society where all people are equal and free, regardless of their sexual orientation, and do whatever you can to ensure that there are no second class citizens in our great state!
Volunteer:
If you have time, or can make time, there are offices all over California where you can phone-bank against Prop 8. You can also phone bank from anywhere in the country, from the comfort of your living room! On Sunday night, I called voters from 5:30 to 9:00 from the West Hollywood, CA office. I called about 200 voters and actually spoke with about 40. Of the people I talked to, 18 told me they intended to vote No (although 2 of those 18 were hostile and said they were voting No to prevent "more gay weddings"--I did not correct them), 14 told me they intended to vote Yes or would not tell me how they were voting, and 2 were undecided. I convinced at least 4 people to vote no who were previously undecided simply by discussing the inherent unfairness in singling out one small minority group for discriminatory treatment under the law. In all, it seemed like a worthwhile way to spend my time. I plan to make more phone calls and go door to door in the days leading up to November 4 and will take the last five days before the election off work to volunteer full time.

Donate:
If you can afford to do so, I strongly encourage you to make a donation to the No on Prop 8 campaign. As I wrote above, the Yes on 8 campaign is better funded than the No on 8 campaign. Every penny you can donate will help to fund advertisements informing the Californian people that Proposition 8 is unfair, discriminatory, and will eliminate a fundamental civil right for over a million Californians.
