Attention McCain campaign, I’ve got news for you, my husband not only supports Obama but has already voted for him.
Deep in the Sandhills of North Carolina, (the toes of the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains) in a little town called Robbins, my husband was raised. The klan here is more than a whisper and before they completely changed over to the Republican party white males here were Dixiecrats. (Appropriately, my spell check wants to turn that word to Dixie Rats)
Integration was forced on the south and in this area the churches and neighborhoods are still segregated. Last election cycle when the hometown boy, John Edwards was running, one of our kinfolk had a hand-lettered sign in his yard stating, "if you want a weak, gay America, vote for Kerry/Edwards." A neighbor of John Edward’s parents had an 4’ X 8’ plywood sign professionally painted with Bush/Cheney and posted in his yard with spotlights shining on it all silly season long. Oh yeah, they’re mean here.
My son, born and raised in this county moved to Japan where he met and married a beautiful Japanese woman, Akiko. He is an English teacher for a company in Osaka, Japan and has been questioned quite a bit about American politics. We Skype often and he told me how often he has to explain that he supports Obama and not McCain. You see the stereotype of the American white male even in Japan is that of a McCain supporter. He proudly shared with me that he sent in his absentee ballot for Barack Obama.
Every time a Republican pundit or a McCain "strategist" starts warning us that we shouldn’t count the southern states in the Obama column yet, I just smile and think about some very special southern while male rednecks that are near and dear to my heart My husband, my son, my son-in-law who lives in South Carolina, his two brothers, my husbands four brothers, my two brothers...
