I wanted to create a central location for information pertaining to the March on Washington, September 24th. There are many of us going so it would be good to not only support each other in our efforts to get there (cheaply) but to also meet up once there.
Also, I've been contacted by a CNN producer who is sending a team to the March. She's going to be doing a piece on the event and is going to be focusing on the people attending (their beliefs, motivation, etc). This is a team that I trust and, knowing I'm going and trying to corral kos-peeps to meet up, she's asked for my help.
Below you will find details for the March, info on the "koskontingent" I'm trying to assemble, and space to share your story on why you think it is important to attend.
Will you be attending? See below...
March information
The March is being sponsored by United for Peace. The plan is for people to congregate at the Washington Monument at 11am with a March being started at 11:30am to the White House. Clergy will lead the March with protesters to follow. The aim is to get as close to the White House as possible, but unfortunately you can only go "so close." I don't know how far they plan on going but with a significant amount of people you can't exactly stop them, eh?
At 3:30p Operation Ceasefire is sponsoring a concert at the Washington Monument. Acts include Thievery Corporation and Le Tigre (both kick ASS!). Seeing these acts, among the many others, is a great peripheral benefit in my humble opinion.
Getting there
If you're thinking of going you should book now. Independence Air is having a KILLER sale from many parts of the country (e.g. Atlanta to DC is $73 ROUNDTRIP). Other origination points include Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, San Fran, Tampa, etc. Also, Airtran, United, Northwest, and Continental have all matched the fares in those markets. I'll emphasize though, the sale has been on-going for the last two weeks and it won't last much longer!
As far as accommodations, United for Peace has a list of inexpensive places in the DC area. If you're desperate or not overly travel savvy, send me an email and I'll help you. I have good travel ju-ju and I want to see you there.
Your Story
If you're planning on going please share your story as to who you are, how your views on the occupation have changed (if they have), your motivation for going, what you hope to achieve, and anything else you think relevant. In doing so, I hope to build a library of contacts to refer my friends at CNN to. We all know CNN coverage sucks, so let's give them some quality peeps to interview for once.
Lastly
I've created an Evite that I'm trying to get participants to sign into if they are attending. I know an Evite might seem a little corny, but for logistical purposes it's ideal. Sign on, invite yourself, and through that medium I can keep you abreast on what's going on and where we'll meet before the March. I think this is going to truly be a unique event and I'd love to meet up and March with the people who contribute to this site.
