The controversy o'-the-day over in wing-nut land is the recent scrap over the credit card donation practices of the Obama campaign. The claim is that all AVS processing in their system has been deliberately turned off and that this allows the donator to easily enter credit card information with completely false name and address information.
While this practice appears on the surface to leave itself open to some forms of fraud, you would have to believe that there was some vast conspiracy to steal credit card numbers from millions of individuals and use them to donate money to the Obama campaign using false name and address information.
Perhaps the most hilarious aspect of this flap is that a slew of wingnuts are right now testing this out by going to the Obama web site and making their $15 donation in order to add their experience to the growing conspiracy.
Recent stories about the Obama campaign contacting a citizen inquiring about a very large donation ... and the subsequent crediting of the amount to the actual card-holder's account should put most fraud accusations to rest. But it won't. The wingnuts are convinced that Obama is stealing this thing $15 at a time. That someone is maxing out their credit card making multiple donations under names like Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble.
Is anyone aware of the procedures used by the campaign to follow-up on donations entered via the web?
