Barack Obama, the next President of the United States of America, was in Reno this morning. At first I didn't think I would go, but yesterday I decided I had to take advantage of this opportunity to see him at least one more time. So I got up and hopped into the shower at 1:00 am this morning.
The gates opened at 7:30 am and I wanted to make sure I would get a good spot in line. Originally I planned on leaving at 3:30 am, but I wasn't done with my hair in time, so I left at 4:00 am. I decided to stop at 7-11 first and get a cup of Obama coffee. While I was in there another woman was getting coffee in the Obama cup and asked if I was going to the rally. I said I was and joked that we should carpool. She invted me to ride with her and her friend, so I decided to take her up on it. It was pretty cool.
When we got there, at 4:45 am, there was around 20 people in line. We waited in the cold while our toes freezed until 7:30 am, when they finally let us in. I was so lucky to get right up to the front! In the end there was at least 15,000 people there.
Barack came on around 10:00 am. I'll get some video up of his speech as soon as I can, I got the whole thing on tape. Half way through the speech the power cut out and there was a huge puff of black smoke at the back of the bleachers. That got everyone on edge for a bit, but apparently the generator went out. The crowd responded by chanting "Obama" and "Yes We Can." I think barack shook a couple of hands during the five minutes it took before the mic was fixed.
When he was done he came down to shake people's hands. When he shook my hand I told him I voted for the first time. Then he wrapped both of his hands around mine and looked into my eyes and said, "Thank you. That means a lot to me. And I mean that, it really does." And I could tell that he really did mean it.
After the rally I ran into Jill Derby in the parking lot, who I did end up voting for. She was very nice and I shook her hand and told her I voted for her.
