I would usually not call someone out like this, but I'm really wondering how many strait-jackets we're going to need November 5th, considering the bat-shit crazy stuff my poor, deluded sister has started coughing up. Lately, she taken to declaiming that "Obama's going to take away your 401(k)!" and "Kids for Obama is a despicable plot to turn kids against their parents, like the Nazis or the Communists!"
Mostly, she's said this stuff privately, but follow me after the fold for what she posted on my public journal.
And if you have any suggestions for ideas that might penetrate her skull (the woman has 4 college degrees - she isn't completely stupid. . . I hope), please share them!
In response to a post I made, calling on the Right Wing to be marginalized, because they "nod and wink" at the skinheads and militia types out there (referencing the plot to kill schoolchildren that was broken up by the ATF yesterday), she said this, an odd mixture of the sane and the crazy:
I don't know a single person on the right who agrees with this. You do realize that if we had Michael Steele as the Republican candidate, or probably even Bobby Jindal, these skinheads would have been planning the same thing? The Right gets these evil creatures as fellow travelers on occasion, but the Left gets the Communists and the Islamists and Bill Ayers, folks who wish to completely overthrow any form of representative government, to name just a few.
I'll be a lot more worried about mayhem if Obama loses than if he wins. (Of course if he wins we'll still probably have some general mayhem - look what happens when the local team wins the championship.) Even if McCain carried every single state with majorities of 10% or more there would still be claims of "stealing" the election and the lawyers are already in place to challenge every damn vote in every damn state. I don't see the republicans prepared to challenge the way the democrats are. But if it actually looks like a McCain victory, we may still be counting when it's time for the inauguration.
I guess the lefties just have the kooks who hang Palin in effigy as a "halloween decoration", because somehow that's OK. Who have Bush being guillotined as a parade float. Who try to "citizen's arrest" Karl Rove. Who routinely pull threatening crap like that, but hey, they're just exercising free speech. If someone hung Obama or Biden in effigy as a halloween decoration would that be OK?
And if Obama does win, and, God forbid, gets a Democrat controlled congress, I foresee virtually nothing but special prosecutor investigations for the next four years. Which is a really good way to make sure that nobody who disagrees with the Democrats even bothers to go into politics again, because who wants to risk their personal freedom and their family's financial well being if their policies turn out to be unpopular later on? And of course that will be why the Democrats will cling to power as long as they possibly can, because they imagine, perhaps correctly, that if they ever do lose power after that sort of misbehaviour, they will be investigated up the wazoo too.
The Right defends positions, the left attacks the questioner. Why does Joe the Plumber's financial status affect his question? It was a fair question. But instead of defending/explaining Obama's use of marxist/socialist rhetoric, the left attacks Joe. How about the reporter from Florida who asked Biden to explain how Obama's position differed from "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs"? That is a fair question of any politician who advocates "spreading the wealth". But instead of answering the question, Biden and the campaign just get mad at the reporter.
This is something I've been noticing for years from the left, and as I've said before it's one of the many reasons I went over to the dark side. The folks on the right might disagree with you politically but they would attack your position not you personally. The left demonizes anyone they disagree with - just ask Joe the Plumber who they've been trying to destroy for the temerity of asking a valid question. But then of course they know that the average American doesn't really want to hear that their wealth (and you do realize that I am wealthy by their definition, since I benefited quite nicely thank you from the Bush tax cuts) needs to be spread around. So all that is left is to attack the messenger.
She has definitely been "drinkin' the Krazy-Aid". Let's add up the damage:
* She says "The Left" include - somehow - both Islamists and Communists. I tried pointing out to her that even her crazies call it "Islamo-
fascism", and that I could hardly see an Islamist lining up with me to support birth control, liberation of women, gay rights, etc.
* She thinks the Right doesn't have a history of rigging elections and vote-suppression. She needs to open up a book, I think.
* She thinks the Left will persecute Republicans with unfounded investigations/prosecutions. Ummm, I guess she doesn't know who Ken Starr is. And she hasn't heard the
Republican calls for investigations into things like the firing of
Republican U.S. Attorney John McKay. Jesus, there's been so
much law-breaking, I figure we'll actually have to let a lot of it slide, in the interests of practical governance!
* OK, I am attacking
her, but this entire election season has been one big slime-fest from the Right, attacking our candidates, while our candidates stood their ground and pointed out the flawed policies on the Right. I've sent her to the
Truth-O-Meter, but she probably think Congressional Quarterly are a bunch of pinkos. . .
* Gosh, she can't figure out what's wrong with asking Joe Biden if he's a Communist. ::forehead-slap::
* My sister, who lives in a tiny little house, and makes no where near $250,000 a year
thinks she did nicely under the Bush tax cuts. At her income level, with her husband on veteran's half-pay and a part-time retail job, and their two dependent kids? There is no way that McCain will do better by her than Obama.
Anyway, keep it nice - she's my sister, even if she is suffering from some sort of politically-induced insanity. And she's the "messenger" of all this interesting "news", so we aren't allowed to attack her. :P
Good thing we live 3000 miles apart, I guess. She lives in the same town as my parents, who were thrilled with the "Grandparents for Obama" buttons I sent them, which they are wearing everywhere. BTW, they all live in a Blue state, as do I.
