After years of public cynicism, I'm truly inspired to see people enduring long lines to cast early ballots -- and those lines won't be getting any shorter come November 4th. Of course, there was once a time when the journey to cast a ballot was much more arduous. Back then, volunteers created "Election Day Cakes" to fortify intrepid voters:
Due to sparsely located polling places in the early days of the United States of America, colonists would need to travel far and wide to cast ballots in local and national elections. To keep up voters' strength, women of hosting towns would serve cakes weighing up to 10 pounds to those going to the polls.
The world-famous Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York has just created and published an updated version of this classic recipe (good news: their cake weighs considerably less than 10 pounds)...
If you're looking for a way to buoy the spirits of weary voters waiting in long lines, this might be just the ticket!
Update: As noted in the comments, handing out goodies to those waiting to vote may be a no-no in some states. But I'm sure GOTV volunteers, campaign staff, and poll workers would appreciate a piece of cake :)
