Even though we live in rural Tennessee, visiting the in laws in rural Alabama is always a bit of a jolt. I have lived in the south for 10 plus years but one is not considered "from the south" unless somebody's great, great, great granddaddy fought during the War of "Northern Aggression". My husband and I had vastly different childhoods something that I believe influences how we both perceive the world today. I have learned over the years to perfect the non-verbal response to things I don't like and will never change since I am ultimately a guest and while I disagree with my in laws they are decent, hard, working people.
What else are you going to do when you are a stranger in a strange world and don't watch football? Take pictures of course....
The drive way is so long that when bad weather strikes they are literally trapped....
Nobody has any idea how long my father in law has had this old Chevy sitting there but long enough it is part of the landscape now....
One of these chickens is named "Lucille" and is actually a pet. My mother in law sings that Kenny Rodgers song to it and feeds it scraps. Who the hell knew that chickens would eat ham? I told her not to feed it chicken and encourage canibalism.... She is the smallest, I think she is the one standing apart from the others.
My brother in law welding my husband's broken hydraulic press.
I twisted my sister in law's arm and dragged her to Selma under the pretext of wanting to see some pretty old houses. I think she realized that I actually wanted to see the Edmund Pettus Bridge because that is where we ended up.
A view of the Alabama river and the back of downtown Selma from underneath the bridge....
Downtown Selma appears to be struggling....
There is a restoration project going on that appears to be stalled. There were still some attractive finds including a number of butterfly statues that signified the project.
This fountain caught my fancy...
We also sauntered through the old section of the cemetery in Selma....
Well thanks for looking and please feel free to post any recent pictures you might have taken.
