Do I really need another reason to vote for Barack Obama? Someway, Somehow, he was able to listen to his common sense and co sponsor a bill which will save many jobs, and keep HOPE alive for a historic landmark.
On Wednesday Barack Obama released the following statement:
SEN. BARACK OBAMA ISSUES STATEMENT ON EFFORTS TO SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN
Sen. Obama is Original Cosponsor of Congressional Legislation to Save the Delta Queen
Columbus, OH –U.S. Senator Barack Obama, original co-sponsor of legislation to save the Delta Queen by extending her exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Act, issued the following statement today:
"As the last remaining authentic, operable riverboat in the world, the Delta Queen is a valuable part of our nation’s heritage that we have a duty to preserve and protect for future generations. As she makes her final stops in Point Pleasant, I urge Congress to support this effort to ensure the Delta Queen may continue to serve the people of Ohio and West Virginia for years to come."
The Delta Queen is the last authentic, overnight passenger steamboat in the world. Senate legislation originally cosponsored by Sen. Obama will extend the ship’s exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Act and allow her to continue operating for another 10 years.

By crossing party lines, and signing a bill brought by Senator Voinovich of Ohio, he was able to add fuel to a growing movement to save a piece of American Heritage on the River.
On October 7th, 2008, The Delta Queen will make it's final stop in Point Pleasant. The residents of Point Pleasant,in Mason County, West Virginia, and nearby Gallipolis, in Gallia County Ohio are accustomed to hearing its calliope, and having the tourists depart the boat and visit different historic sites around the area. Most of the tourists are old timers who enjoy the sleepy town atmosphere. We bus them around, and show them a main street that hasn't really changed all that much in the past 50 years. This is a main street which is definitely not vibrant, but abandoned. Empty storefronts are numerous, and sadly the silver lining is that the whole place is like a giant time warp to entertain tourists. Our town was smart enough to recognize this, so our local government and independent investors put in money to build a wonderful riverfront park, historic murals depicting the Battle of Point Pleasant, and a riverboat dock, where The Delta Queen will Say goodbye next Tuesday, likely for good.
But we will have other riverboat tourists come to town, and the curious legend of THE MOTHMAN will always drive people to our place on the river. It's just sad that a boat which is fully functional, which employs so many people, and has stood the test of time, has to be retired because of some strange bureaucratic law? What is Rep. Obertstarr problem? He probably has good intentions, but MANY, including Senator Obama say otherwise:

I don't know, all I know is that the Delta Queen is truly important to America, as well as Point Pleasant, and i'm glad Senator Obama recognizes this. Ok, he is a politician, but something tells me this guy is supporting this with the best intentions. Anyways, who says he is some elitist snob?
