To all fair-minded Americans,
I need to ask for your help. There is an unfair ballot proposition that, if passed, will take away fundamental rights for some Californians. Please make a donation immediately to fight this discriminatory measure!
Same-sex couples are part of our community. They are our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends and members of our family. They pay taxes, struggle like all of us with high gas prices, and work hard. They are bankers and small business owners, nurses who care for us and firefighters who protect our homes.
And if same-sex couples, like other loving and committed couples in California, want to get married -- to care for each other, protect and take responsibility for each other and be there for each other in times of greatest need, the law now allows that.
But Prop 8 would change that. It would mandate, under the laws of our state that one group of people would be treated differently from everyone else.
Did you know that over 40% of the donations to support Prop. 8 are coming from a group of Mormons in Utah? That's right. The most polygamous group in the nation. How's that for "family values?" They're trying to gain an alliance with conservative Christians with their anti-gay hatred so that Mitt Romney (a Mormon) can make a run for president in 4 years and win over their support, which was absent this time around.
Fair-minded Americans must not allow Conservative Christians and Mormons to overturn the California Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriages and change the constitution by invalidating all gay marriages and preventing any more same sex couples from marrying. The constitution has never been used to discriminate against a minority group. This would be a major setback to the civil rights movement. What's next? A constitutional amendment to bring back slavery? It's possible. All you need is enough signatures and you can get anything on a ballot. If you are a Barack Obama supporter and living in California you must vote against prop 8. Barack Obama and Joe Biden have both publicly stated that they are strongly against prop 8 and any kind of discrimination against our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. Americans who favor liberty and justice must never allow a religious group to force their beliefs on other groups who have different beliefs. The government must never be allowed to decide who someone can share the rest of their life with. And if you're black and supporting Prop. 8, then shame on you!!! You should know what it's like to be discriminated against and treated differently. Finally for all you bible worshippers who pick little things out of the bible for your own advantage but ignore other things in the bible that would cramp your lifestyle of adultery and divorce, shame on you! And reverends and ministers like Frederick Price, James Dobsen, Tony Perkins shame on you even more for misusing the bible to preach hatred and bigotry. The bible says a lot of bad things about a lot of people. For instance, it says that children who are disrespectful to parents should be stoned to death. It also says adultery is an abomination punishable by death. So is divorce. How come no one is trying to enforce these edicts? How come the divorce rate by heterosexuals in America is a stunning 50%? It’s even higher among blacks, including poor conservative blacks who have broken marriages and dysfunctional families and yet ignore that part of the bible and preach hatred and bigotry against gay rights. What about the fact that the bible accepts and even promotes slavery in so many different passages yet never condemns it once? I don’t see any Christian conservatives calling for a return to slavery cause the bible advocates it. Finally, Jesus never said anything about gays and the word "homosexual" was never even added to bible until the mid 1800's by some bigoted white men. But why am getting into all this? America's laws and values are based on the U.S. Constitution, not the bible. And if your church doesn't believe in marrying gays, then they don't have to! Traditional "family values" and "moral values" used to mean loving, committed relationships and strong families. It never meant discriminating against gays and their children. Never! Martin Luther King would be appalled. You know every day I read about heterosexuals who abuse their children, leave their newborns to die in trash cans, murder their children and each other and then take their own lives, etc. Yet I never hear about a gay couple ever doing something like that to each other or their children. Never! Did you know that Massachusetts, the first state to allow gay marriage, has the lowest divorce rate in the country? Yet Nevada, a red state, has the highest. And why is there a crystal meth epidemic raging through all the bible belt states in the midwest states? Do moral values include getting high on Meth and ignoring and endangering your children while you’re all drugged up? These are just some things to think about for those people who choose to discriminate and try to deny equal rights for gays and their families. Worry about your own lives and stay out of other people’s private lives.
