If we don't make it to 60 Senators, but we get really close, Obama could use his cabinet appointments to get us there. If we lack just one - or maybe even if we lack two - Senate spots, he could choose a few Republican Senators from states with Democratic Governors for Cabinet positions.
Pat Roberts of Kansas comes to mind... Olympia Snowe, John Warner, Arlen Specter...
Here in TN, I think Gov. Bredesen might be willing to appoint a Dem to replace Lamar Alexander or Bob Corker. Alexander has served as Sec. of Education before and I think he wants to stay in the Senate til he dies now, but Corker might be interested. And Bredesen might be able to make the case that Ford was a good replacement for Corker since he lost that very Senate seat in a close race. And that would take Ford out of contention for the Governor's race in 2010, which would help Bredesen's choice, Kim McMillan.
