Would like to have some input from the Kos community on the idea of planting an "Obama Tree" to signify the beginning of a new direction for our country.
On Tuesday I'll be working to get out the vote in my small town, and will join a group of friends in the evening for dinner and watching of the election returns on TV. We haven't won anything yet, and like most progressives I won't feel secure until the numbers are finalized. Hopefully it will be a big day for Obama and Democrats nationwide, and we've been thinking about how best to celebrate if indeed the news is good.
Champagne comes to mind, but this election deserves to be memorialized in a more lasting way. Planting a tree would be a meaningful action. A tree is an investment in the future, and the landscape (urban or rural) can always use more green. Children could participate in the planting of Obama Trees, and the trees would serve as a reference point in their lives to the moment when our country chose to turn in a more humane and sensible direction.
I like the idea of planting a tree on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27. It resonates as a classic American ritual. Fall is generally the best time to put a young tree in the ground, as the roots have time to get established before the stress of summer growth. Some folks might like to start an indoor or outdoor Obama plant as an alternative to a tree.
Your thoughts are welcome. No doubt there are some creative variations on this idea...
