My daughter sent me a text message with those words today. She goes to ISU in Terre Haute (Vigo Country), but she had came home to Brownsburg, IN to work at the polls with me. We were in a seriously Red precinct, but we worked the entire day as the Democratic Judge and Democratic Clerk, making sure every vote was counted.
Mccain won our precinct by about 75-25%, but we were lifted up when we got home and started watching the results. Obama was ahead, and Indiana was close. We celebrated and went to bed about 11, after it was called but we were still unsure about Indiana. I woke her up before I went to work at about 6:30 a.m. and she had already checked on her crackberry and knew that we had helped turn Indiana blue.
It has been a long trip for us. She worked at the DNC as a legal studies intern for CNN, she was at every major event, and kept me updated constantly. I felt like I was there. We had talked every day about "our" election, and we kept the faith.
And this morning when she got to Indiana State..she sent me the text message: "I LIVE IN A BLUE STATE IN A BLUE COUNTRY AND I CAN'T GET THE SMILE OFF OF MY FACE." I told her I had the same problem.
Thanks to all my fellow hoosiers for making this happen. All of those who donated their time, their money, their car bumpers, their yard signs. Seeing those things made me feel like there was hope. I've lived here since I was born in 1963, and it's never felt better.
