In Tuesday's Presidential Election, three states (the states that contain the nation's three largest cities)
went OVERWHELMINGLY for President-Elect Obama. In fact, in just the nationwide Popular Vote those three states provided nearly the entire margin.
With the 107 Electoral Votes of those big three states providing 39% of the necessary 270, the Democratic Party continues its huge head-start in presidential elections. This year marks the FIFTH consecutive election
that the Dems win those big three states.
California in particular, though many of us are disheartened by what happened on Prop. 8 represents a huge breakthrough for the Democratic Party. Barack Obama demolished John McCain by much BIGGER margins than even native sons Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan did in their landslide wins in 1972 and 1984. Nixon beat McGovern (55-42%); while Reagan beat Mondale (59 -41%). The GOP is in deep trouble.
POPULAR VOTE (current figures as of 11PM November 7)
Obama McCain
California 6,374,619 (61%) 3,871,760 (37%)
New York 4,357,360 (62%) 2,573,368 (37%)
Illinois 3,293,340 (62%) 1,975,801 (37%)
TOTAL OBAMA MARGIN (from big blue three) +5,604,390
TOTAL OBAMA POPULAR VOTE MARGIN: +7,969,820
That means that these three states represent 70% of Obama's current Popular Vote lead.
Remember when the Clinton campaign said you had to win the deep blue states in the primaries to prove your bona fides in the general? Hillary might have done as well as Obama but it's hard to see how she could have done better. The Republican Party better hope that between now and the next census Oklahoma experiences a huge population growth.
