West Hollywood has been aroar for the last four days. People I talk to speak openly about the discrimination against gays and lesbians from Prop 8. I hear people carelessly stereotype black people as intolerant, others blame the Mormon Church and religious activism for interfering in their lives with no cause. There has been a peaceful protest every night since Tuesday, and they've gotten bigger every night.
Here's what shut down Sunset and Hollywood Blvds from Sunset Junction to Beverly Hills tonight, just in time for the night clubs to empty:
My gay brothers and sisters, LGBT of all colors, ages and persuasions march a very long way and pick up miles and miles of night time Hollywood traffic; A sweet and harmless anarchy. I love it.
Proposition 8 eliminated the rights for gay couples to be married by changing the constitution in a way that is not accounted for in California Law.
(ladies and gentlemen, the LAPD doin' a pretty fantastic job. Let's give em a round of applause for keeping everybody safe.)
Like any sane democracy, any amendment to the constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote in the state's bicameral legislature.
Separate institutions are inherently unequal.
Any segregation of a public institution violates every citizen's right to equal protection under the law.
