The folks behind the “In A Sinking Economy” ad series just put out a “Prop 8” version of their latest installment. A lot of you have already seen this ad frontpaged at DKos and a bunch of other places this week (in its non-Prop 8 version), but for anyone in California I highly recommend putting this one to use. (That is, once you’re done laughing… )
What’s funny is I would not originally have thought of this as a Prop 8 ad. And it’s not like they’ve done some massive retrofit here – they just changed the endtitles. But I actually think the ad’s a LOT stronger this way.
I love this series but this one episode made me a little uneasy when I first saw it because it opens such a personal attack on John McCain’s private life. I mean, who ever knows what makes someone else’s marriage fall apart? But in the context of Prop 8, that’s really just the point. Who gets to judge which marriage is legit and which one isn’t? Shouldn’t that decision belong to the people in the marriage?
So, if the ad gets under your skin a little and leaves you feeling like, hey, John McCain’s private life should be off-bounds, well there’s the point. John McCain supports Prop 8, which would take marriage rights away from a whole class of people. If we’re going to be concerned about privacy rights, the privacy right of not getting your marriage stripped away is a whole lot more important than the privacy right of not getting laughed at.
