From Wikipedia, regarding the City Creek Center Mall currently under development in Salt Lake City:
City Creek Center is a 20-acre (81,000 m2) shopping center development under construction near Temple Square in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. It is an undertaking by Property Reserve, Inc. (the commercial real estate division of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and Taubman Centers, Inc.
And:
The City Creek Center will be anchored by two national department stores: Nordstrom and Macy's. Nordstrom will have a two-story, 124,000 sq ft (11,500 m2). store and Macy’s will occupy a three-story store of 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m2).
Nordstrom and Macy's, according to their websites, both "value diversity" and "protecting the rights and property of customers." I propose writing/calling/emailing these two establishments and letting them know that their continued business affiliations with the Mormon Church are harming the civil rights of their customers (and possibly investors). There would be no reason for those of us who have had our civil rights taken away (and allies) to shop at places that claim to value diversity and rights, all the while engaging in business relations directly with the Mormon Church.
If we can target this specifically toward the proposed anchor stores for the City Creek Center development, we may have a chance at convincing Nordstrom and Macy's to pull out (especially while our protests are gaining some visibility). Losing anchor stores would be a strong blow against this development and Property Reserve, Inc.
Let them hear from us on this issue.
