According to the director of the Field Poll, Mark DiCamillo, writing
in today's SF Chronicle, while 24% of those registered to vote are
Catholic, 30% of those actually voting in California November 4th were
Catholic, and of those a large majority (64%) voted for Proposition 8.
And while Mormons are a much smaller percentage of the population in
California, there is good reason to believe they were motivated to
vote in bigger proportions than their numbers, just as Catholics did.

They got out the vote. Just like the Obama campaign did in North
Carolina, Indiana, Virginia, Ohio, Nevada and elsewhere, they got
their voters to the polls in enough numbers to give them a clear
victory.
And you know what is sickening about this: they beat us at our own
game! The Jesus Loves You (If You're Not Gay) crowd came out and
trounced the Yes. We. Can. movement; they put to shame those who
inherited the traditions of the civil rights movement, whose biggest
push was to organize marches days after the voting had already
taken place...
Are you mad? Are you angry? You should be. That this should happen
in the same year that millions organized and volunteered to wipe away
the stain of the last eight years just, well, sucks.
And it points out what has to be done. Unless the California Supreme
Court overturns the voters' voice, the only way to win another ballot
initiative battle is to organize, amass a campaign battle chest, run
really hitting ads, and get out the vote.
Or have we learned nothing from Obama?
