I spend a lot of my recent free time rolling on the floor laughing...
at that strain of elephantine thought that says that we should return to the type of party that Ronald Reagan lead in the 1980’s.
Even if this were a worthy goal; which it is not, it wouldn't work.
This is 2008, not 1980. Ronald Reagan would not have been successful if he could have run in 2008. Why? He would be running to continue the policies of the most unpopular president of all times that is never an easy thing to do.
Secondly, whole generations of voters have been born and have grown up who never knew Ronald Reagan. These voters are the children of George W. Bush. For them the Rethug brand it toxic, and Regan; even with his sunny optimism could not have changed the yearning for a clean break with a sordid past.
Thirdly, the rethugs that Ronald Reagan led were a very much more pragmatic bunch than we have now. During the Reagan administration we have some of the largest tax increases we had seen up until that time. But more importantly we had the largest redistribution of income since the Great Depression during the Reagan administration. It was called the Earned Income Tax Credit. Yes, that was the brain child of Ronald Wilson Reagan; HE’S A SOCIALIST, A REDISTRIUBTOR, YUCK! Not something that today’s rethugs want to be associated with.
So lets all stop with the Reagan nostalgia, and let’s get back into the 21st century. We will all be better off.
