A new poll conducted Nov 4 & 5, released today by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research on behalf of the Democracy Corps and Center for America's Future, change was not just rhetoric, it is what Americans want. What they really really want.
He has unprecendented support for
a honeymoon to bring change in an urgent but considered and serious way.
The memo about the poll points out that we're facing "desperate" times. While 1992 might have seemed like it was all about the economy, stupid, in 2008, it's really truly no-joke about the economy, stupid idiot.
The uber-pollsters found that Americans are
looking above all for a new middle class economics that cuts taxes for the middle class and ask[s] the richest and corporations to pay their share, a focus on a jobs-led recovery that restores America’s long-term strength, major action to achieve energy independence and affordable
health care for all and a responsible end to the Iraq war.
The poll found that nearly 60% of Americans support Obama and believe he is fit to be president. He's going to need all of the support he can get. We're asking a lot of our president-elect. Miracles even. And we have to hope that the honeymoon glow doesn't wear out so fast when expectations cannot be met overnight. These are BIG problems. And they won't be fixed with band-aid policies.
Voters said
They think the biggest problem is "too much debt, too little savings that leave people squeezed." The housing foreclosures are a poignant reminder of the excesses that hurt people, but it seems the
whole country has been operating above their means and paying the price: 62 percent think thisis a very serious problem, 10 points above everything else.
Um, yea, no duh. The big question is will we give Obama the chance to do what it take to turn things around or are the expectations so high, he's set up for failure. With 36 governor slots up for grabs in 2010 and the 1994 Gingrich "Contract with America" revolt against Clinton fresh in our memory -- let's hope we give change a chance!
