Jim Martin answered his country's call, wore the uniform, and served honorably in Vietnam. He knows what it's like to kiss a child good-bye, not entirely knowing if he will come back. But he was called, he stepped up to the plate, and he did his job.
He is one of the good guys, a humble man who has spent his career focusing on health care, children, and public service. This is the guy that we need in the US Senate for Georgia.
I haven't lived in Georgia very long, but I've been here long enough to argue that the best voice in Georgia will be the veterans. With such a polarized electorate, we need to cut into the conservative vote.
Yes we need the volunteers and yes we need the phonebankers - bring 'em on! - but let's be honest, we're not gonna win this unless we get some republicans to jump ship or stay home. We can do that by appealing to conservative Georgian's patriotism.
Unfortunately, I don't see how we do this on the other issues of the day - health care, the environment, or even the economy. (This is Georgia, where, outside of Atlanta, W. is known as a liberal.)
Conservative Georgia voters, God bless 'em, love their flag. And we need to point out that Jim Martin will do a better job honoring the sacrifices of our veterans than Saxby Chambliss has done.
We need to point out the horrible job Saxby Chambliss has done representing our troops, past and present. He has voted against veterans programs 23 times in his one term, including against funding to research Traumatic Brain Injury in the troops.
He voted repeatedly against requests for higher funding levels for equipment and armor for troops, including the votes that VoteVets.org exposes here:
http://www.youtube.com/...
And as VetVoice.com chronicles here.....
Chambliss Voted Against the New GI Bill for Veterans of the Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.
Chambliss Has Opposed Vets' Program Funding At Least 23 Times in the Senate Alone.
Chambliss Opposed Additional Funding for Traumatic Brain Injury Research-A "Signature Wound" of the War in Iraq.
Chambliss Twice Opposed Guaranteeing Troops Time At Home Between Deployments.
Chambliss Twice Voted Against Funding for Armored Vehicles.
Chambliss Opposed Funding For Equipment And Armor For Troops.
Chambliss Voted Against Health Care Funding for Active Duty Military.
Chambliss Voted Against 3.9 Percent Pay Raise for Military Personnel.
Chambliss Voted Against Increasing Healthcare for Troops.
Chambliss Voted Against Additional $3 Billion to Protect Troops from IEDs.
Chambliss Voted Against Funding for Veterans' Health Care.
Chambliss Chose Tax Cuts for the Wealthy Over Additional Veterans Spending.
Jim Martin understands the issues facing our vets today - they need infrastructure they can depend on for their mental, physical, and economic health, and they deserve a government that will honor the sacrifices they and their families have made. No American should be left behind in these difficult times, and certainly no American who has worn the uniform and served in the military.
This is going to be a very tough runoff, and I think the strongest voice that can cut into Chambliss' base is going to be the voice of the veterans.
