Just as America is about to progress towards universal civil unions with any partner of your choice irrespective of sex, and rightly so, the "gay community" might be about to mess it up.
If two people choose to take legally formalized and respected responsibility for each other, that is fine. If a persons chooses to do so with a partner of his/her own sex, then a secular state will have not to question but to accept that. America has come a long way to progress to this point, and I appreciate that.
What I do not appreciate, and obviously I am not the only one, is the "gay community's" widespread desire to - unnecessarily in the above context - redefine the public use of the term "marriage" away from its historic and religious meaning, which is the union of a man and a woman.
Do so on your own risk, fellas. But note that by doing so, you harm progress towards a more secular and liberal United States of America. Advocating for the latter, I would strongly recommend you just forget that the word "marriage" exists and go for the substance with a cool mind.
Make it about the term "marriage" and you will likely lose a case which you are more than about to win. Forget the culture wars and succeed in transforming America toward a more secular and liberal place.
