So I was one of many volunteers in my neighborhood for Pres.-elect Obama over the last year and a half. I did a little of everything: carried signs, made phone calls, recruited volunteers, ran meetings, etc. And I wasn't even close to being the most active volunteer in my area. So many people donated so much time & money for this cause - I'm so proud to have been a part of it.
Anyway, it occurred to me that the new President will have this huge army of committed volunteers who know how to get things done - and more importantly, they can self-organize without much input from above. And for now, we're doing things like making GOTV calls for the GA-Sen race. But, what about six months from now? What is the best way we can make a difference from here on out?
Surely a lot of us are now asking ourselves this question. I'd bet that some of us have gotten the bug and now want to start volunteering for and/or remaking our local Democratic party. I've already seen a couple of folks on this site who have taken the leap and run for local offices. But I'm interested in what those of you around the country intend to do now that the election is over and there isn't much for our volunteer groups to do (but party!).
So I'm asking, mostly for inspiration. What are you thinking of? Are you turning to local charity work? Is the United Way going to be the beneficiary of this new Call to Action? How about your local church / synagogue / mosque? Has involvement in this campaign permanently changed your outlook on volunteering? Inquiring minds want to know...
