Dear Kossacks,
Last week I posted my first diary, Conventional Wisdom Examined - Public Schools. Fresh from reading Markos' "Taking on the System" I was ready to make radical change through a digital medium! My post gave a brief background on the Business Roundtable, which CEOs are in the Business Roundtable (think your favorites! Accenture, AIG, Exxon Mobil, Fannie Mae and more!), and the anti-democratic, big-business-based education reform movement promulgated by the BRT. I concluded by saying that my next post would cover "The BRT’s agenda and why progressives should organize a counter-movement". Instead, today I'm changing tack. Follow me past the fold to hear why.
I'm relatively new to Daily Kos. I started reading the front page during the early spring of this year. It wasn't until this fall that I started reading the diaries, and I didn't start to read the diary responses until a few weeks later. My involvement with Daily Kos mirrors how I get into a pool- dipping my feet in slowly. I share this with you in order to make my disclaimer: I may be missing something here.
I may be missing something here--and of course you're free to disagree with me or set me straight--but my recent observations show that posts about education do not receive a great deal of attention or discussion. The few that I've seen under Recent Diaries come and go swiftly. A (admitedly cursory) check of the Diary Rescue titles for the month of November show no titles discussing education. And since I've been on Daily Kos, I haven't seen the topic of a education post get picked up on the front page. Why, just today there were several posts about Howard Dean (Howard Dean, folks!)expressing interest in the Secretary of Education position. I appreciated the posts because I did not know he was interested, but it did not grab the kind of attention I thought it would (or should).
Yeah, at least 10% of my decision to change course in this, my second diary entry, is procrastination of outlining my emotional, strongly held oppostion to the Standards based reform. But 90% is because I really want to know what you're interested in. Really. Help me make education "sexy" on DKos by responding to the poll below!
